The course gives an introduction to control of linear systems. In the first part of the course we study the control of systems that are described by linear ordinary differential equations. We introduce the concepts of stability, controllability, and observability of a system, and study their meaning using examples. The main control objective is the asymptotic output tracking of a constant reference signal. In the second part of the course we study the control of linear partial differential equations. We formulate the equations under consideration as abstract linear differential equations on Hilbert spaces, and we use the basics of semigroup theory to analyze the properties of these equations. The main emphasis is in the study of linear heat and wave equations on one-dimensional bounded domains. We learn that for these classes of systems the differential operator can often be represented as an infinite-dimensional diagonal matrix. We study the concepts of stability, controllability, and observability, and again consider the output tracking of constant reference signals. Matlab is used in analyzing and simulating the behaviour of the control systems.
