Learning Outcomes

After the course, the student is able to analyze the basic interactions between light and matter and the operation of optical devices using approaches based on scattering theory, geometrical optics, and wave optics. The student is aware of the basic quantities describing the optical field and other physical quantities derived from them. The student is also able to take these quantities into account when dscribing optical effects and the operation of optical devices. The student is able to analyze the operation of optical instruments using paraxial geometrical optics but is also able to consider the limitations to their performance arising from the wave optics.

Instructions for students on how to achieve the learning outcomes

The homework problems have 40% weight and the final examintion 60% weight in the final grade. Full homework points give a passing grade without examination. About half of the homework points and excellent exam give the highest grade (5).
