Learning Outcomes

The course deepens the knowledge in optics so that the student is able to 1) analyze optical systems using paraxial ray tracing, principal planes and effective focal length; 2) understand the principles of waveguides; 3) take into account the polarization effects in the optical response of materials and analyze polarization-dependent optical effects; 4) analyze light propagation in optical systems using concepts of physical optics, Fourier optics, and systems theory; 5) analyze simple cases of holography and their image formation; 6) take into account the coherence properties of light in optical effects and devices.
