KIE-32106 English for Architects, 3 cr

Additional information

This is a two-period (48 h) course tailored as English language practice for students of architecture. The course materials cover terminology, idiomatic expressions, and grammar appropriate to architecture, which students will practice through a variety of written assignments and oral presentations such as descriptions and reports of materials and phases of construction, structural design, and related business correspondence such as building permission and tender applications.

When the course is over-subscribed, i.e., when more students register than can be admitted to the course, students are enrolled according to the target groups and the time of their registration. Students on the sign-up and waiting list must attend the first class meeting to secure a place on the course.

Learning Outcomes

After taking the course, students - have a well-rounded understanding of the architect's education, work environment, and functions in an English-speaking environment - have an extensive vocabulary and capability to use it in various professional functions and duties of the architect - can effectively and with appropriate terms present and discuss architectural designs and materials in various phases of construction - can professionally and with an awareness of genres communicate in writing with clients, constructors, and trades people on topics such as building plans and building permission and tender applications

Instructions for students on how to achieve the learning outcomes

Attendance (80%), class participation, graded quizzes and written assignments constitute 60% and the final team project presentation 40% of the final grade.
