ELT-43506 Communication Systems Laboratory Course, 5-9 cr

Person responsible

Ari Asp, Mikko Valkama

Learning Outcomes

The goal of laboratory course is to become familiar with the tools used in practical communication system development. After the course a student will be able to use general tools and methods for telecommunication development tasks independently. After the course the student will be able to understand basic behavior of functional blocks of a communication system. The actual laboratory work is expected to take 30 % of the effort. Acquiring the background knowledge, as well as examination and evaluation of the measurement results belong to the student's self studies.

Content

Content Core content Complementary knowledge Specialist knowledge
1. After a basic RF-measurement task student will be able to use basic measurement equipment of telecommunication. Student will be also able to use general measurement units for noise and signal power and make related conversions. Student is also able to distinquish the time and frequency domains.
2. After the IQ- modulation task the student will be able to describe operation of each blocks in IQ-receiver.
3. After the network-analyzer task student will be able to study responses of some unknown devices.
4. WCDMA-1. After this work, student should be able to know basics of planning UMTS indoor radio network, and WCDMA signal propagation in indoor environment.
5. WCDMA-2. After this work, student should be able to understand the difference between IDLE and CONNECTED mode.
6. After the modulation task student will be able to plan and implement basic measurement arrangements of analog modulation system.
7. After the receiver task student will be able to design measurements involving sensitivity, bandwidth, and SINAD characteristics.
8. After the Digital modulation task student will be able to name, classify and separate most general digital modulation methods.
9. After the Wimax task student will be able to explain basic principles of Wimax system, and measure them.
10. WCDMA-SHO. After this work, student should be able to explain basics of signaling, parameters and dynamics of WCDMA-SHO.

Instructions for students on how to achieve the learning outcomes

The assessments of laboratory courses are based on consistency of working in a laboratory and the quality of reports.

Assessment scale:

Evaluation scale passed/failed will be used on the course

Partial passing:

Completion parts must belong to the same implementation
