Placing the Commons Public space and public buildings in Tulli Area In contemporary urban life, the definitions of public, private and collective space are shifting. Different forms of ownership, issues of security and new modes of working and living have caused fading boundaries between these notions. This course aims to re-think these definitions by introducing the notion of the "commons"; both in terms of physical public spaces and buildings and as shared spatial practices, habits and rituals. The course aims to provide students preparing for their thesis with a solid theoretical base regarding public space and public building, and challenges them to take position within this discussion by means of critical writing, analysis and design. The course links theory and critical discussion about these issues to a real-life urban intervention in Tulli Area in Tampere city center. The site of investigation and design is Tulli Area, a Tampere city center area which currently holds many challenges, but houses a lot of potential. Students will conduct site analysis and design a "common place"; linked to topical questions of the area: -the ongoing process to vitalize the design area -the introduction of new traffic arrangements -rethinking the character of the area -introducing new knowledge work environments for creativity and innovation. The course consists of 2 parts, the 10 credit part A and the 5 credit part B: 1) critical discussion on the "commons", definitions of public, private and collective space, alternative site analysis, building program, concept and form 2) developing the project to a professional design + publication 3) thematic of new working and learning environments, essay and research by design

Suoritusvaatimukset

In order to complete the course, you should acceptably complete all the exercises, participate in all the required learning sessions of the course including the critic sessions. If you are planning on taking both the advanced course A (ARK-53100 Rakennussuunnittelun jatkokurssi A, 10 credits) and advanced course B (ARK-53150 Rakennussuunnittelun jatkokurssi B, 5 credits), it is recommended to take both courses on the same implementation year.
