Emphasis in this course is on gaining comprehension on the electromagnetic phenomena. We use frequently online and inclass demonstrations together with simulation tools (Matlab, Comsol) to visualize the EM phenomena and to analyse features of EM systems. The course includes also hands-on tasks, supplement to the simulations and analytical work.

Exam, and three labs. Exam is preferably taken by completing a set of tasks.

Osaamistavoitteet

After completing the course, the student is able to explain the laws of electromagnetism: the Maxwell laws and the constitutive laws. Student is capable of recognizing the connections between circuit and field analysis. Student is able to apply multivariable and vector analysis to work with static, quasistatic and general time dependent EM laws. Student is capable of utilizing Matlab, Comsol to solve and visualize related problems. Student is able to interpret elementary computational problems and reason them using EM laws. Student knows about issues related to electromagnetic compatibility.

1. Electric circuit analysis using lumped parameters. Thevenin-Norton equivalent, system impedances. Energy and power in electromagnetic systems, Poynting's theorem.   Circuit elements in terms of field quantities.    
2. Multivariable analysis and its applications in electromagnetic theory. Multivariable Taylor series, linearization. Field view of electromagnetic phenomena. Electrostatics, magnetostatics, potentials. Basics of compuational tools (Matlab, Comsol).  Well-posedness of static EM problems.    
3. Electromagnetic induction, Ampere-Maxwell law. Time-harmonic fields. Basics about electromagnetic compatibility.      
4. Electromagnetic waves: plane, monochromatic. Basics of wave propagation in nonconducting and conducting media. Origin of waves, Hertz dipole.      
5. Constitutive laws, linear cases. Elementary concepts of electromagnetic metamaterials.     

Ohjeita opiskelijalle osaamisen tasojen saavuttamiseksi

The recommended way to take the exam includes various tasks: homework problems and minor exams. The exams determine the grade, bonus points are awarded from succesfully completed assignments. The labs are mandatory to pass. To get a grade 3, student needs to have good knowledge of the core content. For higher grades, student need to know well the core content and also have complementary knowledge.
