Mandatory requirements: Exam and Matlab project. It is also possible to pass the course (with grade 1) without taking the exam, by actively attending the learning events and completing the project work. Additional literature study/research project needed as a post-graduate course. The assessment is primarily based on the exam which, together with the quality of the project work, are targeted at measuring the knowledge gained in the core contents. Also active participation in learning sessions has a positive effect on the grading. Grade 3 can be reached by showing good command of the core contents. Fluent/profound understanding of core contents, along with elements of complementary knowledge, are required for grades 4 and 5. With minor gaps in the core knowledge, grades 2 and 1 are possible. With significant gaps in the core knowledge or insufficient project work, the student is not able to pass the course. It is also possible to pass the course (with grade 1) without taking the exam, by actively attending the learning events and completing the project work.

Osaamistavoitteet

The course focuses on multicarrier (OFDM, OFDMA, SC-FDMA, FBMC, DMT) and multiantenna/MIMO digital communication techniques, which are central ingredients in all advanced communication system developments including mobile communication systems (LTE, LTE-A, 5G), WLAN/WiFi, terrestrial TV transmission (DVB-T), and digital subscriber line modems (ADSL, VDSL, etc). After completing the course, a student has in-depth knowledge about multicarrier and multiantenna based digital communication techniques and their applications in current and emerging broadband digital communication systems and networks.

1. BASICS OF MULTICARRIER MODULATION - OFDM and OFDMA principles; - Multipath channel effects and equalization; - Adaptive bit-loading, waterfilling principle; - Adaptive coding and modulation schemes; - Peak-to-average power ratio problem and mitigation methods.     
2. SYNCHRONIZATION AND CHANNEL ESTIMATION: - Effects of timing and frequency offsets; - Phase noise effects; - Frequency synchronization; - Symbol synchronization; - Pilot based and data aided channel estimation.     
3. MULTIPLE ACCESS: - OFDMA - SC-FDMA, DFT-spread OFDM and frequency-domain equalization in single-carrier transmission; - Multicarrier CDMA.   SPECTRUM LOCALIZATION: - OFDM sidelobe suppression methods; - Filtered OFDM; - Filter bank multicarrier (FBMC) techniques and waveforms.    
4. OFDM APPLICATIONS: - 3GPP-LTE/LTE-Advanced; - 5G targets and visions; - WLAN: 802.11a/g/n/ac; - Digital broadcasting: DVB-T -family; - ADSL, VDSL, Power-line communications (PLC).      
5. DIVERSITY: - Forms of diversity (time, frequency, space); - Diversity combining methods and resulting performance ; - Outage probability.   - Diversity vs. adaptive modulation and coding methods in system level considerations.   
6. MULTIANTENNA/MIMO TECHNIQUES: - Receiver antenna diversity; - Basics of space-time coding; - Beamforming; - Spatial multiplexing; - Open-loop and closed-loop MIMO techniques.   - Capacity analysis of different multiantenna configurations and schemes; - Massive MIMO concepts.

In addition to attending the learning sessions and reading the lecture notes/text book, working independently on the homework problems is a good way for profoundly adopting the core contents.
