Learning Outcomes

After completing the course, the student can explain the structure of an atom. The student recognises the bonds between atoms and molecules and can explain how these affect to the structure of materials. The student can define the basic material groups: metals, ceramics, polymers and composites. He/she recognises the mechanical, thermal and chemical properties of the above mentioned materials and recognises how these properties affect the materials and their use in electronic applications. The student is also able to explain what conductors, semiconductors and insulators are. He/she recognises the operating principles of semiconductors and recognises the most common semiconductor materials. Furthermore, the student recognises commonly used joint, printed circuit board, coating and encapsulation materials in electronics. The student can define the ways how materials are selected for different electronic applications and how these selections affect the properties, operation and reliability of the final product. The student also recognises the basic manufacturing methods of materials.
