Learning Outcomes

The course gives an overview of most important processes and describe the preparation of essential precursors and intermediates in modern industrial organic chemistry.

Content

1. Basic products of industrial synthesis.   Synthesis gas. Methanol, formic acid, formaldehyde.  Reaction mecanisms. Details of chemical processes and reaction conditions. 
2. Overview of industrial catalysis. Zeolites.   Catalitic metals and metal oxides. The structure of heterogenous catalysts. Homogenous catalytic reactions   
3. Building blocks C1-C6. Polymer precursors.  Olefins. Edible oils, fats, waxes. Soaps and detergents. Sugar. Dyes and pigments. Adhesives. Specialty and fine chemicals. Pharmaceutical industry. Explosives and propellants.    
4. Biorefinery.      

Instructions for students on how to achieve the learning outcomes

The course consists of 7 lectures and 3 seminars. Every student must give a presentation on a selected topic during seminars. The course grade will be based on an exam. If the student demonstrates thorough understanding of the core content, s/he may pass the course with the grade 3. In order to achieve higher grade, the student should demonstrate competency in the points specified as "Complementary knowledge" and "Specialist knowledge".
