Pilot course: Tandem Intercultural Communication and English

This course is 3 credits and students will receive the credits with the code of the course KIE-08906 Intercultural Project Work

The aim of this course is to develop and practice the intercultural communication (ICC) skills and the spoken and written English of both international and Finnish students at TUT. Together, the participants will learn about theories and topics of intercultural interest and will identify and discuss the influence of culture on the academic and social practices in TUT, the wider Tampere area, and their own culture. They will identify and practice strategies to communicate effectively in an intercultural environment including public speaking and writing short reports and essays in English.

Learning outcomes:

This will be a Moodle-based course which the students will complete in small groups. The course will also include 4 teacher-led `whole group sessions with the other participants on the course. Upon completion of the lectures and assignments on the `ICC and English course the students will be able to:

-Recognize how culture affects the academic, business and social life of students, teachers and staff in the university.

-Apply strategies to facilitate adaptation to other cultural norms and integration into a new cultural context.

-Apply strategies to communicate more effectively across cultures in English.

-Produce a written diary of the whole experience

Requirements

Students need to attend 80 % of the group instruction hours (10 hours of group instruction + 12 hours in small-group meetings + 16 hours of online activities + 44 hours of independent study).

Participation and attendance 30%

Participation in forums and their own group tasks 40%

Portfolio 30%

Priority for acceptance on the course will be given in the following order: Erasmus exchange students, international degree students and local students.
