Learning Outcomes

The student can individually deal with tasks and duties in specialization of Environmental and Energy engineering. After passing the course the student will have the ability to write an extensive literature survey or to work independently in the laboratory as a part of a research group. A student who has compiled a literature survey can produce a review article following the principles of scientific writing. The student can find and classify information as well as write a compilation of research articles and data according to his/her own view, combining and applying information to solve the research problem. The student who has carried out a laboratory project can plan and execute laboratory experiments, and masters the essential laboratory methods in environmental and/or energy technology as well the use of research instrumentation. The student can also perform comparative analysis and draw conclusions from research data, and report the findings both orally and in writing. The project can also be an exam on a environmental technology text book or completed as an intensive course of specialized topic in the field of Environmental and Energy Engineering.

Content

Content Core content Complementary knowledge Specialist knowledge
1. Separately supervised individual studies in the selected topic of specialization or taking part in an intensive specialized course.
2. Book exam, literature review, case or research dealing with selected topic
3. Laboratory project: independent laboratory work as a part of a research group, mastering laboratory methods    Up-to-date knowledge of the latest research methods and topics

Instructions for students on how to achieve the learning outcomes

The minimum criterium is that a student has shown capabilities to do individual work and has gained a key knowledge in the selected topic of specialization. The grade will be determined by the extent of self-initiative, diligence and activeness of the student. Also, meeting the schedule set for the project is of high importance. The quality and thoroughness of the literature survey or laboratory project report also affects the grade. A good understanding the core content will suffice to a grade 3. In order to earn a grade 4 or 5 the student will have to have a good or excellent understanding of complementary and specialist knowledge. The exam will be graded on a scale of 0-5 by the level of knowledge of the exam material.

Assessment scale:

Evaluation scale passed/failed will be used on the course

Additional information about prerequisites
The student must have earlier studies which give a proper basis for doing a project work in the topic concerned.
