Osaamistavoitteet

The course concentrates on mobile radio network operating principles and structures and on the interference management through radio resource management algorithms in wireless networks. The main emphasis during the course is on cellular networks focusing on the LTE/LTE-Advanced (4G) technology. However, especially the radio resource management part is having a fairly general structure, applicable in various wireless systems. The course structure is divided into two parts: mobile radio networks and radio resource management methods. The LTE/LTE-Advanced (4G) is used as a reference system. Related to mobile radio networks, the students are be able to analyze the structures of typical mobile radio networks, to explain it's evolution from traditional circuit-switched into packet-switched implementation and to assess protocols together with different protocol layers used in network elements in mobile radio networks. The students are also able to explain typical functionalities related to mobile radio networks (e.g., location management and call setup procedure). The part introducing and asssessing radio resource management functionalities targets in providing relevant information so that the students are able to understand and analyze different interference management and radio resource management techniques used in typical wireless networks.

1. Evolution of mobile radio networks: The students are able to assess the structures of GSM, UMTS and LTE radio networks. In addition, the students understand the evolution of circuit-switched network into packet-switched ones and are able to understand the mobile core network evolution together with radio network evolution.  - Interfaces between LTE radio network elements - Different protocol structures used in LTE core network
2. Basic functionalities of LTE radio networks: Students are able to describe the main role of different LTE network elements, including the radio access network and the core network. In addition, students understand the difference between control plane data and user plane data, and are able to indicate the type of data handled in each LTE network element. Students are able to understand the layer 1 and layer 2 protocol structures of the LTE radio interface. Related to this, students can describe the main tasks of each protocol layer, including PHY layer, MAC layer, RLC layer and PDCP layer, and understand the difference between the access stratum and non-access stratum protocols. In addition, students are able to outline the main functionalities of the RRC protocol, and recognize different possible user equipment states in LTE networks.  - Detailed layer 1 (PHY) procedures - Detailed layer 2 (MAC, RLC, PDCP) procedures
3. Radio resource management functionalities: Students are able to describe the main RRM functionalities in mobile radio networks, including their main challenges and effects on network functionality. The considered RRM functionalities in the course include: - Radio resource management and modeling - Resource allocation, admission control, network access and load control - Link adaptation: Power and rate control - Handovers and mobility management - Scheduling - Retransmission protocols (e.g. hybrid ARQ) - Interference management LTE network is used as a reference system, but the studied RRM principles are applicable also in many other wireless systems. After learning this part of the course, the students are able to assess and possible invent new methods for different radio resource management strategies related to RRM.  - Detailed random access procedure - Detailed connected mode mobility procedures (e.g. handovers) - Detailed idle mode mobility procedures (e.g. tracking area updates)
