This doctoral course covers the basics and introduction of research methods, with specific application to issues in industrial and information management. This course will cover various research methods, ranging from quantitative and qualitative methods and design science methods and general issues in applying them. In-depth understanding of and the ability to apply the methods is not covered in this course. The course is intended for doctoral students in industrial and information management, and it is open to students (with relevant background) in other fields with an appropriate methodological stance. The course will be particularly useful for students who need to explore and decide upon their research method selection and its framing for their doctoral thesis and/or scientific papers. The course requires that the students are enrolled as doctoral students at TUT or a partner university. As learning objectives, the course will 1) provide basic understanding about different research methods to develop students¿ knowledge on alternative methods. It will 2) improve the students¿ ability to assess studies using different methods, and 3) to apply, on general level, different methods in different settings. After the course, the students should 4) have the readiness to discuss and evaluate studies using different methods, and 4) select the method most suitable for different research questions.
