Learning Outcomes

After the course, the student is aware of descriptions of light as rays, wave motion, and particles. She is able to analyze the basic operation of optical instruments in terms of paraxial geometrical optics. She is also able to use approaches based on wave optics and is aware of the basic quantities describing the optical field and other physical quantities derived from them. She understands the use of wave optics to describe propagation, reflection, and refraction of light as well as interference and diffraction. She also has basic understanding of how these effects limit the performance of optical instruments. Finally, she understands the basic description of light-matter interactions and principles of lasers.
