Learning Outcomes

After taking this course, the student is able to analyze second- and third-order nonlinear optical responses of materials using the susceptibility formalism. The student is able to formulate the wave equations that describe the basic nonlinear interactions and to solve them in simple cases while taking into account the influence of phase matching. The student is able to apply these methods to phenomena based on frequency conversion, nonlinear index of refraction and four-wave mixing.
