Learning Outcomes

After taking this course, the student is able to analyze second- and third-order nonlinear optical responses of materials using symmetry principles. The student is able to apply these principles to phenomena based on frequency conversion, electro-optic effect, nonlinear index of refraction, and four-wave mixing. The student is also able to describe ultrafast nonlinear propagation dynamics of ultra-short pulses in waveguides in the presence of dispersion including self-phase modulation, soliton propagation and stimulated Raman scattering.
