The course will cover biochemical/chemical principles of biocatalysis, including background information related to different aspects of biocatalysis, enzyme kinetics (including reaction inhibition mechanisms, energetics, allostery, etc.), non-protein groups (mainly coenzymes), enzymes immobilization, enzyme catalysis in unconventional media, and industrial applications. The course will also briefly introduce catalytic antibodies, nucleic acids as catalysts, and antibiotics (focusing on non-ribosomal peptide). After completing the course, the students will have a good knowledge of the fundamentals and applications of biocatalysis and enzymology.

This course has three regular exams and two half-exams. The half-exams are optional, but will give you an additional chance to complete the course successfully. Half-exam 1 covers the first half of the course material and half-exam 2 covers the second half of the course material. Each accounts for 50% of the final grade. The full exams cover all the course material and accounts for 100% of the final grade. Please note that half-exam 2 is given at the same time as the first full exam. You can take either or, but not both, your choice. All the exams are given electronically, which is more flexible than written (paper) exams and allows the students freedom of choice to when to sit for the exam within a given set of dates.
