THINKING RHYTHMS
Public space and public buildings in University of Tampere area

The ARK-53100 Architectural Design Advanced course is a research&design course, that links theory and site research to an architectural intervention. The course aims to provide students who are preparing for their thesis with a solid theoretical base regarding public space and public building, and challenges them to take position within this discussion by means of critical writing, analysis and design.

In the first part of the semester, students will work in small groups and get acquainted with research methods for site analysis, they will engage in critical discussion about theory and they will investigate contemporary programs. Based on the conducted site research and theoretical investigations, students formulate their individual assignment by choosing a specific site within the research area and choose their own program brief for a public building. In the second part of the semester, students will work individually on their design project. An active attitude is required throughout the whole semester, since not only the end result (the design project) but also the results of the research phase and the process will be assessed.

In autumn 2018, the Architectural Design Advanced course will investigate the area around University of Tampere through the thematic lens of Thinking Rhythms.
Students will conduct site analysis and design a new public place linked to topical questions of the area:
-the ongoing process to vitalize the design area
-rethinking the character of the area
-introducing contemporary programs, such as concepts of new knowledge work and learning environments, contemporary cultural facilities and hybrid buildings.

The course consists of 2 parts, the 10 credit part A (group research and design) and the 5 credit part B (thematic research). Even though the courses complement each other, it is possible to follow the A and B course separately.
