Objectives On completion of this module, students should be able to: - Exercise a range of personnel management skills required of an aeronautical engineer, pilot or similar professional in the aviation sector - Apply the theory to analyse the case studies - Understand and exercise the non-technical skills applicable to working in a multi-crew environment

1. Onboard avionics systems related to situational awareness  Flight Instruments (big 6) and their operation   Flight deck instrumentation (analogue vs glass ) Air data computer Sensor limitation to ADC including icing 
2. Situational awareness and Human Performance  Human Performance and Limitations  Personality factors: instrumental traits, expressive traits. Training and working as a member of a team; effectiveness under difficult circumstances. Human Limitations (physical environment). Crew co-ordination; workloads; monitoring requirements. Responsibility and command authority; limitations on authority. Optimum decision-making; communication; division of tasks; use of checklists; mutual supervision, teamwork and support under normal, abnormal and emergency conditions; use of interfaces (software, hardware, environment and liveware);  
3. Error models  Psychology of Aviation professionals  Error Models (i.e. SHEL, Error Chain, Swiss Cheese).  
4. Case Studies    Seven case studies: Staines LHR crash 1972 Tenerife Crash 1977 British Airtours Manchester disaster, 1984 British Airways (BAC 1-11) windscreen loss, 1990 British Midland Oil loss event 1995 American Airlines (Cali CFIT), 1995 Air Transat (fuel loss event), 2001  
5. Air Traffic Management  Flight levels Types of aircraft and the permitted use Reduced vertical separation minima  Classification of Airspace Airspace categories in Finland and UK
