Tutkimusala määrittää pääaineen opinnot. Opinnot päätetään henkilökohtaisesti, mutta yleisenä vaatimuksena on, että tutkimusalan opintojen tulee muodostaa vankka teoreettinen osaaminen väitöskirjan alalta ja opintojen on muodostettava tarkoituksenmukainen kokonaisuus.

Tohtoriohjelma tukee poikkitieteellisyyttä. Sen takia tutkimusalan opinnot voi sisältää aineesta vastaavan yksikön tarjoamien opintojen lisäksi myös muiden yksikköjen ja yliopistojen opintoja yleiset linjaukset huomioiden. Teoriaopintojaksojen lisäksi opinnoissa voi olla mm. tentittävää kirjallisuutta, seminaareja, kesä- tai talvikouluja.

Jatko-opinnoiksi hyväksytään vain tiedeyliopistotasoiset opinnot. Muualla kuin yliopistossa suoritettavia opintoja koskevat samat vaatimukset kuin yliopistossa suoritettavia opintoja. Opintojen tulee olla jatkotutkintokelpoisia. Vain erityistilanteessa ja perustellusta syystä maisteritason opintoja voi sisällyttää osaksi opintoja. Vastuuohjaajan tulee puoltaa hakemusta.

The major subject of the doctoral degree is determined by the field of research in question. The major subject contents are always customised personally, but a general requirement is that the major subject studies must provide solid theoretical knowledge in the dissertation's field of research and form a coherent whole.


The doctoral programme supports interdisciplinarity. As a result, studies in the field of research may include not only courses provided by the unit responsible for the subject, but also courses in other units and universities, taking into account general policies. In addition to theoretical studies, major studies may include, for example literature, seminar or summer or winter schools.
Only postgraduate studies completed at a university may be counted toward the degree. The requirements that are applied to studies completed at the university also apply to studies completed outside university. Only master-level studies can only be included in the student's main subject studies, if there is a justified reason to do so. Responsible supervisor has to support the application.
