Learning Outcomes
After passing the course the student can Evaluate the irradiance of a scene and calculate the signal to noise ratio in the detection of an image or a light signal. Explain the physical and technical characteristics of filters, optical fibers, light sources and detectors available in the market. Calculate the maximum permissible exposure (eye and skin) laser radiation in accordance with IEC 60825-1. Calculate the minimum distance of eye damage to laser radiation in accordance with IEC 60825-1, under assisted and non-assisted observation. Specify safety glasses in accordance with IEC 60825-1. Explain the different optical properties of biological tissues; on the mechanisms of interaction of light with biological tissues; and on the major medical applications of lasers and fiber optics. Explain the different biomedical photonic techniques and its applications in medicine and biology.
