Completing the course consists of the following four parts:
1. Biweekly assignments (total 5-6 essays)
2. Writing an essay on a course topic
3. Giving an oral presentation on the topic (optional, gives extra points towards the final grade)
4. Reviewing other students' essays

Please note that there is no exam on the course.

Osaamistavoitteet

After completing the course the student will understand the basic functioning of the visual system including optics, anatomy, and physiology. In addition, the student will understand the human eye in closer detail including visual defects (e.g. refractive errors) and know the most important eye diseases (such as cataract), and their treatment options. The student will also understand the most important different eye types in animals other than mammals. With the knowledge gained during the course the student will be able to outline the information flow in and understand the basic functioning of imaging systems including biological eyes and man-made machine vision systems. The student will also be able to make a simple analysis on an imaging system and estimate its fundamental performance limitations. The student will be able to apply the knowledge to analyse technological devices, such as display devices and cameras, from the visual system point of view in practical contexts, e.g., human-machine interaction design. The student will also be able to compare machine vision imaging systems to the human visual system.

1. Anatomy and physiology of the mammal (human) eye.  Anatomy of non-mammal eyes.  Evolutionary background of different eye structures.
2. Optics of basic imaging (camera) systems, physical limitations of imaging systems.  Practical examples of digital camera/machine vision systems.
3. Optics of the mammal eye (including refraction errors and their correction).  Optics of non-mammal eyes.
4. Eye examination methods and most common eye pathologies (diseases, congenital defects).  Contemporary/emerging treatment options for most common eye problems.
5. Visual image processing in the central nervous system.  Neural networks.  Performance comparison of biological and artificial (computational) image processing.

Ohjeita opiskelijalle osaamisen tasojen saavuttamiseksi

The course has been built so that each topic area is accompanied with written material and/or on-line lectures. There will be a question or two on each topic, and these questions are answered by short essays. Each essay is a small research project, and there are no direct answers in the course material. You are required to do your own research, and in many cases there are no "correct" answers for the questions. As the emphasis is on understanding instead of learning small details by heart, own thinking and analysis of your own and fellow students' work is highly encouraged. The keys to success: - dedicate enough time for the course; understanding the content, doing the research and writing the essays takes time ¿ there is a very clear positive correlation between time spent preparing the essays and learning outcomes - analyse both your own and other students' answers carefully and learn from them - try to apply the new knowledge in as many ways as you can imagine
