Students are required to take a proficiency test for both the BSc and MSc degree. A proficiency test is evaluated both in terms of the student's familiarity with the thesis topic and the use of language. The content is usually evaluated by the thesis examiner and the language by a professional from TUT's Language Centre. Proficiency tests are evaluated on a scale of Pass/Fail. A student who receives a failing grade will have to revise the essay according to the examiner's instructions until the essay meets the minimum requirements.

Degree students whose previous education was in a country where the medium of instruction is not Finnish or Swedish are also required to take a proficiency test before receiving a degree from TUT. The Dean determines the language proficiency requirements for foreign degree students.
