The total mark is determined based on a final exam, class exercises and assignments, and the student's activity in exercise classes and group projects: 1) Lectures. There will be 24 double lectures. They are intended to give an essential introduction to the concepts and methods used for dealing with structure of matter. 2) Class exercise sessions. There are 12 class exercise sessions, for getting familiar with the topics and practicing problem solving techniques. 3) Each week there is one special assignment problem to be solved and submitted in written form prior to exercise session. |
Osaamistavoitteet
After completing the course the student understands basic phenomena concerning structure of matter, (s)he recognizes different types of bonds between atoms, and how they reflect on molecule structures and solid state. The student is familiar with mechanical, thermal, electrical, magnetic and optical properties, which all can be used to classify phases of material and different types of solid state: metal, semiconductor, dielectric material. The student is able to describe structure of matter using atoms, elementary particles and basic interactions in the nature. The student is able to solve problems by applying rather independently the example solution models in these areas. To assist the solutions of the problems, the student can also compile graphs describing the basic processes, and solve analytical problems.

Ohjeita opiskelijalle osaamisen tasojen saavuttamiseksi
The assessment of the course is based mostly on the written exam. Approval requires ca. half of the maximum points from specific exercises, submitted in written form. It is possible to elevate the grading with additional activity in the (oral) class exercises.
