Assessment criteria: Work in progress and final outcome are assessed through interim and final evaluations. Special emphasis is given to the evolution of the design process. Group work and individual assignments are assessed both in content (setting of a basic architectural concept, approach to given site and program, relationship with urban space and environment, adequacy of formal and functional solutions, spatial quality) and presentation techniques (graphic representation, model work). Requisites for assessment: Deadlines for course assignments must be met compulsorily. Attendance to all sessions is mandatory. Active participation in group work, tutorials and reviews is required. |
Osaamistavoitteet
After completing the course, students will be able to: -create and develop basic architectural designs of public buildings that satisfy both aesthetic and functional requirements -recognise and explain the best practices of contemporary design of public buildings and use them in one's own design -develop the basic spatial, functional, form-generating and site-driven premises of the design of public buildings and become familiar with the potential of architectural language and expression -understand the impact of public buildings in their immediate environment by recognising the implications of a specific site and program -recognise and apply to one's own work the basic features of legislation and standards -provide the basic internal conditions of comfort and protection against various climatic conditions by recognising and applying the basic principles of sustainable development -familiarise and use the fundamentals of critical, abstract and conceptual thinking -develop independent and collaborative work -manage a basic project and develop presentation techniques and skills.

1. | Content: The assignment consists of an architectural design task, generally carried out as an individual work, consisting of a small- or medium-sized building predominantly with public use associated to a specific, varying theme. | ||
2. | Through basic analysis of site and program, students progressively become acquainted with the theme mostly through a hands-on approach, by proposing architectural solutions to give a response to the specific theme. | ||
3. | The practical approach is supported with theory-based inputs or lectures. | ||
4. | The level of definition required is the one of preliminary, basic building approval drawings. |
