This course gives an overview of modern radio receiver and radio transmitter architectures and critical issues in analog and digital processing in the receiver/transmitter front-ends, used in all wireless communications devices. Strong emphasis is on flexible radio type of techniques, where the idea is to increase the role of DSP in the transceiver front-end processing to achieve flexible solutions, e.g., for multi-standard systems. After completing the course, students have good understanding of the key RF-functionalities and related performance issues when designing the analog and digital signal processing blocks for digital communications receivers and transmitters. She/he can also explain the possibilities and challenges of increased use of digital signal processing algorithms for implementing or enhancing the RF functionalities.
