Course objectives
The laboratory course increases skills in use of advance investigative techniques to implement the fundamental principles of environmental biotechnology.
Content of the course
Topics covered are: aerobic/anaerobic reactor design and operation, microbial kinetics, biomass determination using various microbiological techniques, growth curves, growth inhibitions, degradation of xenobiotic compounds, and enzymatic activities. Instrumentation: Multi-Scan & Fluoro-Scan, fluorescence microscopy, gas chromatography, total organic carbon analyzer, spectrophotometry, and conventional tools in wet bench chemistry. The biological techniques include: Biolog, staining, enzyme activities, protein determination
Requirements
A group report on each topic and a final exam on the theory covered. Attendance is compulsory.
Literature
Handouts that briefly detail the individual experiments. The students are responsible for researching the theory of the basic principles involved.
