Course objectives
The goal of the course is to provide a basic understanding of post-graduate studies and scientific and applied research. After the course students are able to find a research problem, review literature, and prepare an initial plan for post-graduate studies and research. Furthermore, students will have basic knowledge on research methods.

Active participation in lectures (70%) and exercises.

M.Sc. level studies completed or close to completion.
Notes
The course is compulsory for post-graduate students in Information Technology. Students applying for the post-graduate program should take this course no later than during the first year of their post-graduate studies. The students can be officially accepted to the program only after passing this course (no later than one year after applying). The course is also recommended for MSc students aiming at working in R&D projects in industry. MSc students (still pursueing for a Msc) who have not made the final decision on whether to apply for the post-graduate studies, are allowed to do the exercises later. However, for passing the course, they should do the exercises not later than two years after the final lecture. If they graduate earlier and apply for the post-graduate program, they should do them during the first year of their post-graduate studies (i.e., no later than one year after applying). This course is inteded to be given twice a year, in spring and fall terms. The course is organized in cooperation by all institutes of the Department of Information Technology.
