Course objectives
This course will introduce to the role of biocatalysis and enzymes in environmentally relevant processes such as in nutrient mobilization and its cycling, in the degradation of bio- and geopolymers, and in detoxification and transformation of pollutants in soil, sediment and water.

Content of the course
Analysis of amino acids, peptides and proteins by HPLC. Isolation, purification and characterization of proteins from cell cultures, bioreactors, bioprocesses and life samples from soil, sediment and water with HPLC, FPLC. Protein/enzyme profiling with 2D-electrophoresis. Measurements, techniques and approaches in enzymology, principles in enzyme kinetics and transformation tools in characterizing enzyme reaction mechanisms. Mechanisms of enzyme induction, repression and de-repression. Tracing of biocatalysis in environmentally relevant bioprocesses with chromogenic- and fluorogenic model substrates under in situ conditions. Introduction to public protein databases and its value in selecting specific biocatalysis and metabolic pathways for microbial bioremediation in soil, sediment and water. Introduction to techniques in proteomics and its value for environmental biotechnology.

Requirements
Approved examination and report of exercises.
