The main focus in Communications Engineering is on the following three areas: 1. Communication Networks and Protocols: Network aspects of the Internet, especially protocols and mechanisms related to routing, quality of service, and security. 2. Digital Transmission: System level view to signals and signal processing techniques in the transmission chain. Digital transmission techniques, digital signal processing in receivers and transmitters, radio resource management, and radio network planning. 3. Communication Circuits: Analog circuit design for communications equipment. Main emphasis is on RF ASIC development.

Students may specialize in one of the three focus areas in Communications Engineering. Each of them has two or three compulsory courses and the rest of the minimum number of 30 credits for the module shall be completed with studies selected freely from the list of elective courses.

At least three of the following courses are required: TLT-2356 Practical Protocol Engineering, 4 cr. TLT-2486 Advanced Course in Broadband Networks, 3-6 cr. TLT-2656 Special Course on Networking, 3-6 cr. TLT-2686 Next generation networking, 4-6 cr. TLT-2706 Traffic modeling and network simulation techniques, 6 cr. TLT-2716 Teletraffic Theory I, 3-6 cr. Digital Transmission

PREREQUISITE COURSES: TLT-5206 Communication Theory, 7 cr. SGN-1106 Introductory signal processing, 3 cr. COMPULSORY COURSES: TLT-5406 Digital Transmission, 7 cr. TLT-5506 Communications Systems Laboratory Course, 5 cr. In addition, include at least 12 cr. from the courses listed below. The following sets of courses are especially recommended when focusing on: 1) Radio Network Planning: TLT-6206, TLT-6306, TLT-6406, TLT-6506 2) Wireless Communication Systems: TLT-5606, TLT-6206, TLT-6506 3) Radio Architectures and Signal Processing: SGN-2016, TLT-5806, TLT-6306, TLT-8206. SGN-2016 Digital Linear Filtering I, 5 cr. TLT-5606 Spread Spectrum Techniques, 5-7 cr. TLT-6206 Radio Propagation in Wireless Networks, 3 cr. TLT-6306 RF Equipment for Wireless Networks, 3 cr. TLT-6406 Radio Network Planning, 5 cr. TLT-6506 Digital Mobile Communications, 5 cr. TLT-8206 Communication Circuits and Modules I, 4 cr.

COMPULSORY COURSES: TLT-8256 Mixed-Mode Communication Circuits and Modules I, 4 cr. TLT-8506 Communication Circuits and Modules II, 7 cr. TLT-8606 RF-ASIC Design II, 6 cr. Include at least one of the following courses: TLT-5806 Receiver Architectures and Signal Processing, 5-7 cr. TLT-8156 High-Frequency Filters, 5 cr. TLT-8556 Mixed-Mode Communication Circuits and Modules II, 7 cr. TLT-8806 Communication ICs Development Seminar II, 8 cr.

Please notice that some of the listed courses are common with the Finnish curriculum and they are not given in the international programme. Special arrangements to pass these courses can be requested from the responsible teachers.

Communications Engineering is counted as a single advanced study module even if the courses of multiple focus areas are completed.

Students writing their Master's thesis in Communications Engineering must complete the course TLT-1756 Communications Engineering Thesis Seminar, 1 cr.

Following courses are also recommended as prerequisites:
KIE-3426 Thesis Writing in English, 4 cr.
KIE-3376 Technical Writing in English, 3 cr.
