Objectives
Familiarize the student with whole publishing process for the research results. Practical advice for the writing and presenting of a scientific article and academic reports.

Content

1. A scientific publication: structure, contents, written presentation style and practices.  IEEE practices. Good scientific practice, research ethics.    
2. Use of English in scientific writing.  Analyzing examplary papers. Specific terminology.    
3. Phases of the publishing process. The peer review process. Scientific Societies.  Purpose and reputation of different fora.    
4. Oral presentations: preparation, materials, structuring. Participation to a scientific conference.  Examples. Acting as a conference session chair.    
5. Tools: Internet, data bases, word processing tools.  Use of LaTeX tools.    

Requirements for completing the course
Active participation, exercises during the course, writing of a scientific article, exercise conference.

Evaluation criteria for the course

  • Passing the course requires active participation and successful completion of the exercises. Quality of the written publication affects the number of study points.

  • The seminars motivate writing, provide perspective, and give practical advice. Writing of a publication is a very problem oriented form of learning. The student self defines the objective and content, in cooperation with the supervising professor. A mini conference, where students apply the contents of the course in practice for paper preparation, review, and presentation, is organised as a larger exercise at the end of the course.

    The course includes a mini-conference. The students are expected to write, review, present, and discuss papers.
