Objectives
During the course students will learn the basics of Finnish. They will be able to introduce themselves using simple expressions. Students will also be able to understand and to use vocabulary for hobbies, foods, family and weather. The aim of the course is to raise the students' language ability to the level 1 of the National Certificate of Language Proficiency, equivalent to the A1 level specified by the Council of Europe in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.

1. Vocabulary: greetings, introducing oneself, numbers, months, days of the week, the time, vocabulary for family, food and weather.       
2. Grammar: the verb groups, consonant gradation, the genitive, the partitive and the local cases in singular. Making questions and forming negative sentences.       
3. Listening/speaking: Students will recognise the sounds and understand simple phrases. They will learn to talk about themselves using simple expressions.       
4. Reading: Students will understand short, simple texts on topics covered in the course.       
5. Writing: During the course students will write short essays on topics covered in the course.       

Requirements for completing the course
Active participation in lectures (75% attendance), assignments and successful performance in the final examination.

    Principles and starting points related to the instruction and learning of the course

  • Different listening comprehension, pronunciation, speaking and writing exercises belong to the course programme. Students will do listening comprehension and pronunciation exercises both in the classroom and in the language lab. Also short translation exercises and games belong to the course programme. Activities will practice discussion skills in pairs and in small groups. During the course students will write short essays on central topics of the course.
