Objectives
By the end of the course, students will be able to understand slow, clearly spoken, simple spoken Finnish as well as short texts. Students will also be able to cope with everyday situations involving the exchange of information. Students will be able to write short texts, and they will gain a command of basic grammatical structures, with a vocabulary adequate for dealing with familiar topics. The course aims to raise the students' language ability to the level 2 of the National Certificate of Language Proficiency, equivalent to the A2 "Waystage level" specified by the Council of Europe in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages, which stresses the development of spoken skills.

1. Vocabulary: foods and drinks, eating at a restaurant, describing people, expressing one's opinion. New vocabulary for home, living and clothing, the human body and adjectives.
 		      
2. Grammar: usage and meaning of the local cases and the partitive singular, new nesessive verbs and the past tense; some postpositions.       
3. Reading: Students will be able to read texts on different topics. They will learn to find out the basic forms of the verbs and nouns in order to find them in a dictionary.       
4. Writing: essays on topics covered in the course. Students will be able to combine their old and new knowledge of the Finnish language.       
5. Speaking/listening: Students will understand clear, slowly spoken Finnish on topics covered in the course. They will be able to cope with everyday situations.       

Requirements for completing the course
Active participation in lectures (75% attendance), assignments and successful performance in the final examination.

    Principles and starting points related to the instruction and learning of the course

  • Spoken and written exercises. Activities will practise discussion skills in pairs and small groups. Vocabulary and grammar will be taught and reviewed with games and writing and translation exercises. During the course students will write essays on central topics of the course.
