Objectives
The goal of laboratory course is to become familiar with the tools used in practical communication system development, including simulation tools and system-level RF measurements.
The actual laboratory work is expected to take 30 % of the effort. Acquiring the background knowledge, as well as examination and evaluation of the measurement results belong to the student's self studies.
Content
Content | Core content | Complementary knowledge | Specialist knowledge |
1. | The RF-measurement tasks familiarize with RF measurement equipment and system-level performance characteristics of various modules of radio communication systems. |   | |
2. | In the modulation task, I/Q-task, and digital modulation task, the student becomes familiar with many aspects and measurements related to analog and digital modulation methods. |   | |
3. | A bus controlled measurement setup is studied in the GPIB-task.
In the simulation task, the student works with a few different simulation tools used at different layers in communication system development. |
  | |
4. | In the receiver task, the sensitivity, bandwidth, and SINAD characteristics are measured. |   | |
5. | WCDMA task familiarizes with different WCDMA radio interface related measurements. |   |
Requirements for completing the course
The course includes a number of partly elective laboratory exercises. For each of the chosen exercises, a pre-report, a laboratory measurement report, and a final report need to be completed in an acceptable way.
Evaluation criteria for the course
Prerequisites
Prequisite relations (Sign up to TUT Intranet required)
Additional information about prerequisites
The prerequisites depend on the chosen exercises, most of the courses included in the minor in the digital transmission area are required, as well as several courses of the major studies.
Remarks
For major in digital transmission, 9 credits are required to be completed in the laboratory course; for minor, 5 cr are sufficient.
