Objectives
Teach students to go beyond text books and to study scientific literature in molecular biology and biotechnology.

1. | Students will study literature in trends in biotechnology and present what they have learned from molecular evolution techniques and applications of nucleic acids, modification of proteins and their applications in measurements and related studies. The utilization of procaryotic organisms in various biotechnological applications is emphasized.
The first part consists on 16 hours of so-called journal club presentations and the latter part is discussions and presentations on modern molecular technologies to study protein structure and function and applications thereof. |

Requirements for completing the course
Full participation to the lectures. Each participant makes analyses of selected journal articles.

Remarks
The part in period 3 is given by docent Urpo Lamminmäki, University of Turku during three consecutive days, four hours each. Lecture material consists of journal articles to be delivered from the Department of Environmental Engineering and Biotechnology, English. The course is organized every second year.
