Objectives
To get familiar with similations of networks. This course is devoted to those interested in theoretical and practical aspects of simulation of telecommunications networks and systems for network performance evaluation, optimization and control. The course is divided into two parts. In the first part the knowledge of probability, statistics and stochastic processes required to understand the content of the course is given. In the second part we consider basic principles of discrete event simulation and put a major attention on setup of simulations, collection and analysis of output results. Well-known network simulation packages, including ns2 and OPNET, are also considered. The attention is also paid to simulation of Markov chains that is of major importance in analysis of computer networks and systems.
