Objectives
Modern biotechnology research utilizes genetic engineering to enhance process functioning for higher yields and improved down-stream processing. To master these needs the student has to learn the rationale how to solve some of the key points from upstream to down-stream.

Content
Content Core content Complementary knowledge Specialist knowledge
1. The course is a hands-on laboratory exercise on basic methodologies in recombinant-DNA technologies and related fermentation technologies. The works consist of cloning of genes by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) into Eschericia coli expression vectors containing protein purification tags. The correct constructs will be verified by various molecular biology tools. Thereafter the over-producing E. coli strains are inoculated into a lab-scale fermentor and the growing kinetics and factors affecting the growth are studied. Finally the cells are collected and protein expressed will be purified by affinity chromatography. Education in the methodology related to protein analytical chemistries are provided throughout the course, too.
