Description:

Students will perform an independent literature search and write a literature review according to the seminar instructions indicated in the course material. The written review needs to be approved by the instructor prior to oral presentation in given schedule.

Additional information of course implementation:

Prerequisites: Biochemistry 3 cr and Microbiology 3 cr or equivalent. A maximum of 30 students will be accepted on the course. An introductory lecture on 2nd of February at 12.15-13 in FC117. It is mandatory for all participants. The course will start on Monday 23rd of February and last until 6th of April. The course will be held in classroom FC117 on Mondays at 12-15. During the three hour meeting three presentations will be held. The presentations will be given in alphabetical order of family names. If you are not able to be present on the day of your presentation you must arrange a change of dates with another student. The professors will not participate in rearranging the dates but you must inform them on any changes. The final, printed version of the written report must be handed in a week prior to the oral presentation to Tea Tanhuanpää(FC323). The seminar consists of a written report of approximately 20-30 pages and an oral presentation covering the content of the report. The oral presentation lasts about 20 minutes and ten minutes are reserved for discussion after each presentation. In addition each student must act as an opponent for another student. The opponent has to read the report of the other student and act as a chairman during the discussion after his/her presentation. The chairman and other students must ask questions during the discussion. 80 % participation in seminars is required. The reports and presentations will be given in English. You can decide the topic of your report yourself but it has to be accepted by the professors Puhakka or Karp. The course will be graded on scale 1-5. The written report must follow the instructions for the scientific writing given in the guides above or the report will not be accepted. Pay close attention to the reference techniques and do not copy and paste any text from anywhere. Wikipedia is not a valid reference source. Plagiarism will result in immediate rejection of the seminar.
