Objectives

Special course on multicarrier techniques (OFDM, DMT) and their applications to terrestrial radio and TV transmission, mobile communication systems, and digital subscriber line modems.

Content

Content Core content Complementary knowledge Specialist knowledge
1. BASICS OF MULTICARRIER MODULATION - OFDM principle; - Effects of channel distortions (channel response, nonlinearities, phase noise) on the performance; - Adaptive bit-loading, waterfilling principle; - Peak-to-average power ratio problem and mitigation methods.
2. SYNCHRONIZATION AND CHANNEL ESTIMATION: - Frequency synchronization; - Symbol synchronization; - Pilot based and data aided channel estimation.
3. DIVERSITY AND MULTIANTENNA TECHNIQUES: - Coded OFDM and frequency diversity; - Receiver antenna diversity; - Basics of space-time coding and MIMO-OFDM.
4. OTHER RELATED CONCEPTS: - Multicarrier CDMA; - DFT-spread OFDM and frequency-domain equalization in single-carrier transmission; - Pulse shaping based MC systems.
5. APPLICATIONS: - Digital broadcasting: DAB, DVB-T/H, ISDB-T; - WLAN: 802.11a/g/n; - WiMAX: 802.16; - 3GPP-LTE; - ADSL, VDSL.
