Learning outcomes

Introduce the field of complex Systems with examples. Introduce and practice some of the basic tools necessary for Complex Systems modeling. Deveop a systemic view of engineering problems and methods. Encourage systemic and skeptical thinking. Prepare students for advanced courses (e.g. Complex Systems 2 seminar series in the spring, Agent-Based Modeling in the winter and projects e.g. thesis work) in Complex Systems and related fields.

Additional information

Complex System is a multidisciplinary research topic and a problem solving strategy that acknowledges the limitations of analytical, single-paradigm mathematical models and strategically complements them by simulations, algorithms and multi-paradigm models. The course addresses the challenges of the field by introducing a variety of analytical and simulations tools, methodologies, and some archetypes of complex systems in the form of lectures and laboratory exercises.
