Description:

This course is devoted to learning the main concepts supporting the operation of an optical communications system. It begins with a review of the characteristics of transmitters, optical fibers, passive components, amplifiers, and receivers used in optical communications. The aim of this part of the course is to provide a good understanding of the interplay between the features of various optical components used and the quality of transmission. Once the components level is clarified the lectures will focus on system design issues. Detailed topics included: review of lightwave propagation in optical fibers, dispersion and nonlinear effects, attenuation characteristics, modulation properties of light emitting diodes and laser diodes, advanced sources of short optical pulses, optical amplifiers, receiver design, noise in PIN photodiodes and avalanche photodiodes, techniques to measure the quality of transmission, design of analogue and digital point-to-point links, modulation formats, wavelength division multiplexing, time division multiplexing.
