In this course, students will learn the details of how a GNSS receiver acquires and tracks GNSS signals. It will begin with a review of GNSS signal structure (with an emphasis on GPS) and the types of raw measurements that a GNSS receiver generates (pseudorange, Doppler, and carrier-phase). Most of the course will then describe how these raw measurements are generated inside the receiver. Topics covered include antenna effects, front end downconversion and sampling, receiver signal processing (Doppler removal, correlation, signal integration), and loop filter design. Additionally, the course will describe how signal acquisition is accomplished, both in a strong and a weak signal environment. In addition to lectures covering the topics described above, students will have weekly Simulink-based projects in which they will apply what they are learning in the classroom. The projects build on one another such that, by the end of the class, students will essentially have a working software GNSS receiver implemented in Simulink that is able to process both simulated and real data.
