Requirements
Final exam and an assignment. The assignment has to be completed before attending the exam.
Completion parts must belong to the same implementation
Principles and baselines related to teaching and learning
- slides, demos and hands-on exercises using Matlab will be the main teaching methods used in the course.
Learning outcomes
After passing this course, the student should have the knowledge of the different compression methods used for digital video transmission and storage, including the state of the art video codec H.264/AVC and its two recent extensions MVC and SVC.
Content
Content | Core content | Complementary knowledge | Specialist knowledge |
1. | Compression methods for digital transmission and storage of video. The functional blocks of a modern video compression system with emphasis on signal processing aspects. | video pre- and post-processing | video rate control and implementation aspects |
2. | Application of video compression algorithms in International standards (e.g. MPEG-4, H.263, H.264) and in practical video applications (digital TV, video phone, internet video). | video applications, e.g. streaming | future generation video codecs and future video broadcasting systems. |
Evaluation criteria for the course
The course grade is based on the exam performance and acceptance of the course project. The threshold for passing the course is at least half of the maximum exam points. The course exercises focus on each core content and gives the opportunity to students to implement and use PCs to enforce the theory learned in the lecture through ready-made and newly implemented functions in Matlab environment. The final exam assesses the students' performance with respect to the learning outcomes.
Assessment scale:
Numerical evaluation scale (1-5) will be used on the course
