Independent work on exercise project, weekly studio meetings, critique session. Lectures in English and exam.

Learning outcomes

The student can solve the public building of one rather difficult main function after having taken the course. The student knows the principles of the spatial design of the public building and identifies the factors of which the planning process consists. He can apply the principles of solutions in his own planning work. He has developed his view and planning readiness in architectural design and functional demands.

Content

1. The aim of the course is to provide students with the ability to design public buildings. The exercise is to design a public building located in the city center of Tampere. Total volume is about 3000 squaremeters.      
2. Studying the spatial design of the public building and building types different. Deepening of the planning readiness acquired earlier. Training to the dimensioning of spaces and to the adapting of the regulations concerning the planning of the public building in planning task. Solving of the rather difficult planning task in way which satisfies architectonically, functionally and concerning the city scape.  Preoccupation of the personal planning view. Developing of new solutions.  Innovative architecture solutions. 

Evaluation criteria for the course

The excercise is estimated on scale 1-5. The sectors of the evaluation are among others: -architectonic head idea, -relation with the environment -functionality, -spatial qualities. The excercises are evaluated in common critic sessions which belong to the study attainment. Participation activity also affects the grade of the course.

Student should have basic knowledge of designing a simple public building.
