Learning outcomes

By the end of the course, students will learn the basics of Finnish. They will be able to introduce themselves using short and simple-structured Finnish expressions. Students will also be able to understand and use vocabulary for family, foods and drinks. CEF: A1.

Content

1. Vocabulary: greetings and introducing oneself, numbers, the days of the week, months and telling time, family, buying and paying, foods and drinks.     
2. Listening/speaking: recognizing the sounds and understanding simple phrases. Students will learn to talk about themselves using simple expressions.     
3. Reading: texts on topics covered in the course.     
4. Writing: short texts on topics covered in the course.     
5. Grammar: verb types, consonant gradation, the genitive case, the partitive case and the local cases in singular. Making questions and forming negative sentences.     

Evaluation criteria for the course

Active participation in lectures (75% attendance), assignments and successful performance in the final examination.
