Learning outcomes

Student can describe a functional block diagram of the physiological recording system. Student can identify most common physical and chemical quantities that can be measured from the human body to characterize the condition of the central vital systems and functions of the body. Student can describe the most common methods to perform different recordings from the physiological system, including the cardiovascular, neural, sceleto-muscular, and pulmonary systems. Student can apply the knowledge on basic physiological measurements in different clinical applications, like patient monitoring and ambulatory monitoring. Students can describe the main methods to analyze the data and results of the physiological measurements.

Content

Content Core content Complementary knowledge Specialist knowledge
1. Human body as a complicated system: organ system level organizations of the body  Tissue level organization.
2. Generalized physiological recording system. Invasive and non-invasive approach to measurements.  Signal conditioning and noise reduction methods in the recordings.
3. Measurement principles, methods and devices of vital physiological systems: cardiovascular, neural, sceleto-muscular, and pulmonary system.  Analysis methods of the measurements.
4. Specific applications of physiological measurements: patient monitoring in ICU and during anesthesia, ambulatory monitoring.  Recordings for the control of therapeutic devices, implanted systems.

Evaluation criteria for the course

Assessment scale:

Numerical evaluation scale (1-5) will be used on the course

Partial passing:
