Learning outcomes

After taking this course, the student is able to analyze the second- and third-order nonlinear optical responses of materials using the susceptibility formalism and its symmetry principles. The student is able to formulate the wave equations that describe the nonlinear interaction and to solve them in simple cases while taking into account the influence of phase matching. The student is able to apply these methods to phenomena based on frequency conversion, electro-optic effect, nonlinear index, refraction and four-wave mixing, and ultra-short pulse propagation .
