Learning outcomes

By the end of the course the student will have achieved the following knowledge and skills: -Extended awareness of key issues in the world of business -Developed the language skills needed to interact in a range of business settings -Gained confidence and experience in describing business enterprises

Content

1. Specialist business English, vocabulary and terminology relevant to the following fields and themes: Management, Company Structures, Financial Institutions, Marketing, Trade and Commerce, Meetings, Company Profile.  Examination of topical business texts from The Economist and BBC World Business Report video recordings.   Meeting skills based on Sunday Times video course "Effective Meetings".  
2. Grammar of problem areas: article usage and phrasal verbs, prepositions.   Remedial grammar study, as and when necessary.    
3. Reading and listening comprehension to obtain and analyse information on topical business issues.   Update students¿ business awareness and knowledge through the use of authentic materials    
4. Language behaviour: How to use appropriate language strategies in specific business and social situations   A video-based introduction to cross-cultural communication.    
5. 15-20 minute student presentation of a business organization.   Examination of the language of oral presentations. Pronunciation practice - emphasis on articulation and syllable stress.  One-to-one presentation feedback.  

Evaluation criteria for the course

Continuous assessment, successful completion of final exam and oral presentation

Assessment scale:

Numerical evaluation scale (1-5) will be used on the course
