Learning outcomes

The course targets new and emerging 3D Media Technologies and will provide in-depth knowledge about the creation, processing, delivery and visualization of 3D moving scenes. After the course, the students will know the basics of binocular vision and how they are taken into account while capturing and processing 3D video. The students will be able to design application-specific multi-camera capture system. They will know the principles and the state-of-the-art techniques for compression and transmission of 3D video as well as its display on stereoscopic and auto-stereoscopic 3D displays. The students will have knowledge about typical 3D artifacts appearing during the stages of capture, format conversion, compression and transmission and the advanced signal processing methods which can tackle them.

4. Compression of 3D video. Multi-view compression. Compression of depth.Emerging standards for 3D video compression. Transmission of 3D video over packet networks. Broadcasting.   Luminance compensation in 3D compression. Error-resilient transmission of 3D video.  3D compression-specific and transmission-specific artifacts and post-filtering. 
5. 3D displays. Stereoscopic and autostereoscopic displays.  Display-specific artifacts.  Quality measurements for 3D displays. 

Evaluation criteria for the course

Three laboratory works and one assignment should be completed. Course grade is computed as follows: First laboratory work - 20% of the mark, second laboratory work - 20% of the mark, third laboratory work - 20% of the mark, completed assignment - 40% of the mark. All four units must be passed otherwise final mark is not given. There is no exam.
